Issued 16 December 2008

Bank of St Helena has been informed by American Express that with effect from the 31st December 2008, sales of American Express Sterling Travellers Cheques will cease in St Helena Island .  This is in conjunction with approximately a hundred other merchants’ world wide.  The key reason for this discontinuation is the low profitability of the product.  In the meanwhile, Bank of St Helena has ordered a supply of United States Dollars Travellers Cheques and in addition it is investigating other options to source Sterling Travellers Cheques.

Service Detail: Sale of Travellers Cheques

Travellers Cheques are a secure way to carry funds when travelling outside St. Helena.  Not only are they much less useful to a thief than cash, but if they are lost or stolen, the holder can claim a refund from the issuer.

Bank of St. Helena has United States Dollar American Express Travellers Cheques® on sale in USD50 and USD100 denominations.  These can be purchased at the bank either for cash or by debit to your account.

Travellers Cheques can be encashed in most countries at banks, larger hotels and in many shops.  They are useable onboard the RMS St. Helena.

Bank of St. Helena charges 1% of the face value for the issue of Travellers Cheques.  You may be required to pay further costs at the point of encashment - please ask there for details.
